If you know me, you know that Hummus Place has well, a very special place in my heart and belly. Many a years ago when I went for my first interview at per se to join their special events & private dining team, my then boss Celia asked me to name my favorite places to eat in the city and explain why. One of them was Hummus Place and the reason being that they do simple delicious food and in a highly consistent manner. It really is the best, cheap food in all of Manhattan. When I moved to the BK about 8 years ago, I would make frequent trips to Hummus Place. At that point in time they still had their location on MacDougal, one on the Upper West Side, one on 7th Ave and Bleeker and one in the East Village. It was when there had just started to be multiple outlets. I had so many times if they would open in the BK. I eventually stopped and while they have expanded North in Manhattan, they have yet to cross any of the bridges. There are places like it not far from me but no one does it like Hummus Place. I still go to pick up at least once a week, sometimes more. Today I changed it up and added an order of falafel into the mix. Theirs is filled with herbs and has a perfect crisp crust and a warm, soft inside. It also comes with special sauce which is a mix of their tahini and their green sauce which is my favorite unique sauce accompaniment in life, IN LIFE. It cannot be recreated or found anywhere else. Lemon-Parsley sauce is what I refer to it as sometimes, because someone who worked there once said that, but it is just green sauce that just explodes with tangy flavor in my mouth. Standard order is Hummus Masabacha (no extra oil) which means it has whole chickpeas on top, as pictured below and I like to add an egg as well, extra green sauce and hot sauce or “Skhug” which I still have a difficult time pronunciating, and whole wheat pita. You really can’t go wrong, so follow my preferences or not in ordering, but just get yourself there.
